In the late seventies, my father owned an orthotics and prosthetics shop, and I made a guitar strap for myself out of heavy duty prosthetic leather. That’s right, the kind of leather they used to hold on an artificial leg. 5” wide, I slammed a hole in the ends with a leather punch clipped off the four corners, skived down the edges and hooked it up to a chocolate brown 1971 Gibson ES335. All of my buddies seemed to like it and I thought it looked very cool. This little event began a 30 year process for me.
At the time, I had a strap that came with my guitar – but it was a little cheapie. Actually, it came free with the guitar. I had no money and the free webbing strap worked but I always knew the strap played an important part in my overall vibe.A lot has changed since then. But I still use my orthopedic connections to get the finest grade orthopedic leather available. It’s soft and durable. Has a great look to it. And no two skins are alike either.
So now I own several (14 to be exact) guitars and each has its own strap. And honestly, 3 of them are not even Bebop. I like locking straps, so for me, the strap lives with the guitar.
My strap is part of my personality. It’s who I am and what I believe in. It communicates my musical passion.
